Manchester City may need to be perfect to retain the Premier League title

Manchester City may need to be close to perfect to create history and win a fourth consecutive Premier League title. It isn’t new territory for Pep Guardiola’s side as previous seasons have seen City go on mammoth winning streaks to clinch the Premier League.

This season appears set for a tight battle at the top of the table. Liverpool currently sits at the top of the Premier League with a 5-point lead over the reigning champions. Manchester City do have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s side. Arsenal sit third level on points with Pep Guardiola’s side. Ange Postecoglu’s Tottenham side sits fourth as a potential dark horse in this season’s title race only 8 points off the top of the table.

It sets the scene for what could be an enthralling second half of the Premier League season. During their past three Premier League title wins late season-winning runs have been a key part of City’s success. It may again be the case this season given the form of Jurgen Klopp’s side. With Liverpool determined to send off their departing manager in style, it sets the scene for what could be an epic Premier League title race.

Pep Guardiola knows it is important that Manchester City are around the mark as the season heats up. Speaking after their 3-1 win over Burnley the City manager said: “I don’t know, we are there. What is important is that we are there. I know now that in the first part of the season, it’s a lot of games. Now we are discounting games, and we know that if we drop points with the quality of Arsenal and Liverpool, and maybe another one.”

The scene is set for what could be an epic race as City chases history.
