Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says Wolves deserved their win over the European champions. The treble winners slumped to their first loss of the Premier League season against Gary O’Neil’s well-organised side.
Speaking post game the City boss congratulated Wolverhampton Wanderers on their win. He said: “Congratulations Wolves, they played really well. We had our own moments – I don’t count the last 10 or 15 minutes as it was more difficult. We didn’t properly do our process to attack with a bit more fluidity and that was why we struggled a little bit. In the transitions, Neto was better than us. They beat us in that position not because we were disorganised, but they were better in that position that we could defend well.”
Wolves winger Pedro Neto gave Nathan Ake a torrid time all game. The Portuguese winger put in a man-of-the-match display and was a constant threat on the break. Gary O’Neil’s side came in with a gameplan to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side and hit them on the break. They executed it to perfection and came away with a massive three points.
It was a frustrating day for Erling Haaland as Wolves packed defence denied the striker any goal-scoring opportunities. Pep Guardiola added: “It is not easy when he has three players. There are a lot of players there, it’s not easy but it happened.”
Haaland couldn’t get into the game as he had no service, and Wolves marked him out of the game.
All in all, yesterday was a frustrating game for the European champions. They will have to put the defeat behind them quickly as they face RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night, followed by a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal next weekend.
