Manchester City linked with Frenkie De Jong

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong.

Phil Thomas of the Sun has reported that City are considering a move for De Jong after withdrawing from the race to sign Declan Rice. Thomas also adds that Barcelona would want up to £90 million for the Dutch international.

Barcelona’s complicated financial situation means that they likely need to sell players to fund moves for any incoming signings. The Daily Mail has previously reported of the dire financial situation at Barcelona.

It is unknown if De Jong would be willing to move to City. In an interview with RAC1 in March, he stated: “I’m very calm here, very happy at Barca. I want to stay at Barcelona for many more years.”

De Jong was heavily linked to Manchester United last summer – including by the Manchester Evening News – but the Barcelona midfielder opted to stay at the Catalan club.

The midfielder joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and has made 183 appearances for the Catalan club. De Jong has scored 15 goals and added 21 assists during his spell with Barcelona.

He is also a regular for Holland having represented the Dutch national team on 51 occasions, scoring 2 goals for his country.

City are in the market for a midfielder after Ilkay Gundogan left the club for a move to Barcelona.

After missing out on Rice, a move for De Jong could be the next best thing.
