Is a new deal at Manchester City on the horizon for James McAtee?

Across this summer there will be decisions made by Manchester City over a host of players who spent the 23/24 season out on loan. The world champions had a host of talented young players spend last season out on loan across Europe. One of those players was James McAtee. A new report now indicates that City want McAtee to sign a new deal with the club this summer.

Alan Nixon and Kostas Lianos report for the Sun that Manchester City want to tie James McAtee down on a new contract. They also report that McAtee’s current deal expires at the end of the 25/26 season. Furthermore, Nixon and Lianos report that Girona is interested in signing McAtee. The pair also reports that Girona wants McAtee either on loan or to buy the young playmaker.

Playing at a higher level with no doubt further the career of James McAtee.

James McAtee has spent the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United. He has impressed during those two loan spells with the Blades. Even though Sheffield United struggled in the Premier League last season McAtee showed that he is capable of playing at the highest level. But it does appear that the England youth international would be better served by playing at a higher level.

A move to Girona could give McAtee that opportunity. Girona earned themselves a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League and that could be the perfect platform for McAtee to develop. His talent isn’t in question nor is his potential. The problem as it stands is he may suffer from a lack of opportunity if he stays at Manchester City next season. McAtee needs minutes and games to further develop. He may not get that at Manchester City.

It is clear that McAtee remains thought of highly as the world champions. The club wouldn’t be keen to tie him down on a new contract if he was deemed surplus to requirements. It may take time for McAtee to break into Manchester City’s first-team squad but he does possess the talent to do so.

If Manchester City can get McAtee to sign a new deal it will be positive news for him and the club. It appears from there that what next season holds in store for the young playmaker will become apparent. It’s now a matter of waiting to see what McAtee decides to do to see what the future holds for the England youth international.
