Pep Guardiola is right to believe that his midfield lynchpin Rodri is currently the best midfielder in world football. City’s midfield general scored a late equaliser in their 1-all draw with Chelsea. Across the past 12 months Rodri has proven to be the best midfielder in world football and he showed it again against Chelsea last weekend.
Rodri put in another dominant performance as he tried will his side to victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. While the champions didn’t pick up all three points against Mauricio Pochettino’s side Rodri once again showed just how good he is with a determined display against Chelsea. He was the driving force as City dominated the second half to come away with a point at the final whistle.
There is little doubt about the Spanish internationals standing in the game. Over the past 12 months, he has been one of the main driving forces behind City’s success. He famously scored the winner in last season’s Champions League final which cemented his place in Manchester City history. Rodri also picked up the player of the tournament at the recent FIFA Club World Cup. Those are just two of the many accolades Rodri has picked up in the past year as he has cemented himself as the dominant midfielder in world football.
Guardiola heaps praise on his midfield general
Speaking after another inspired performance from his midfield general Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Rodri. After his goal had earned City a point Guardiola told the media post-game: “He’s an unbelievable player. He’s the best midfield player in the current world by far. It’s because he’s able to do everything. So the tempo he has, especially his character when the situation is going wrong, he steps forward to arrive to the box, go backwards, the ability to play short and long. He’s always ready.”
It’s high praise from Pep Guardiola for Rodri. But based on his importance for Manchester City and his performances over the past year there is little doubt about who the best midfielder in the world football currently is.
