Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kyle Walker will remain as Manchester City captain. The England international spoke in an exclusive interview with the Sun earlier this week as his private life has become the subject of increased scrutiny. The Manchester City manager also refused to be drawn into the discussion surrounding Kyle Walker’s private life.
The Manchester City manager was asked during his pre-game press conference if Kyle Walker would continue as City’s captain. Pep Guardiola explained that the players decide the team’s captain and he has no involvement in the process. He told the media: “Absolutely (he will remain as captain) because it’s a decision for the team and not mine.”
Guardiola also refused to comment on Walker’s private life. The City boss gave an emphatic response when asked about City’s captain’s interview with the Sun. Guardiola said: “I’m not going to talk about that, not at all, I don’t talk one word about personal issues. I support him and his family. I don’t talk about personal things.”
With the Manchester City players appearing happy with Walker to continue as captain Guardiola’s response today, the discussion about Walker’s suitability for the role should be put to bed. While the discussion about the City captain’s private life continues to be the focus of the media Manchester City and Guardiola remain focussed on matters on the pitch.
The champions are currently preparing to face Burnley tomorrow evening. They will host Vincent Kompany’s side at the Etihad in a crucial match in the Premier League title race.
