The Manchester City and Liverpool rivalry extends to matters off the pitch

The recent rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool has been one of the better rivalries in Premier League history. The two sides have gone head to head on the pitch resulting in two epic title races in recent years. Manchester City pipped Liverpool by a single point in the 2018/19 and the 2021/22 season. The rivalry has also extended to matters off the pitch.

Kieran Maguire has reported for footballinsider247.com that Liverpool is applying pressure on the Premier League for a resolution on the Premier League’s case against Manchester City. The European champions face 115 charges for breaching the Premier League’s financial regulations. City’s case is currently in front of an independent commission after the Premier League laid charges against the treble winners.

While all parties concerned want a resolution in Manchester City’s case, it will take time to resolve the matter. Such is the complexity of the Premier League’s case against Manchester City a resolution may not come in the immediate future. Martyn Ziegler reported for the Times that City’s case could take anywhere from two to four years to resolve.

Saturday’s clash between City and Liverpool was originally scheduled for a 5.30 pm kick-off. A local safety advisory group including the Manchester Police wouldn’t allow the game to proceed at the original kick-off time. It was changed to a 12.30 pm kick-off time due to safety concerns after several incidents of crowd trouble last season.

On the pitch, the two clubs have had a rivalry that has raised the standards of the Premier League. The rivalry has now also extended off the pitch. All of these factors have made it a must-see fixture.
