Guardiola confirms Phillips will play a key role in the Carabao Cup

Pep Guardiola has confirmed during today’s press conference that Kalvin Phillips will start against Newcastle United in the third round of the Carabao Cup, ManCity.com reports.

This will be the England internationals first start for the Blues this season. Despite a lack of game time, Phillips has remained positive about his City career.

Sources close to the club hint that he is desperate to prove himself, and now is his opportunity.

While it is possible we could have seen him start this game, Guardiola now has no choice. With injuries to key players and red card shenanigans from Rodri at the weekend, Pep will call on Kalvin.

Some have criticised the player during the short cameo’s he has had. However, he is yet to be given the opportunity to full establish himself.

Without consistent game time, it is challenging for players to find rhythm and confidence.

Although, Rodri is absolutely vital to City. He is arguably the best in his position in the world currently. However, even the best need to rest.

So this could serve as an opportunity for the midfielder to build on his confidence and to find his City rhythm.
