Pep Guardiola provides an update on Manchester City’s injury situation

Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Manchester City’s injury situation. The treble winners have been struck by an injury crisis to begin the season.

Bernardo Silva has joined Manchester City’s injury list after the European champions win over Red Star Belgrade. The Portuguese midfielder hobbled off just before half-time to join the injured contingent at the club. He joins Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic as players currently out injured.

City manager Pep Guardiola gave an update on the Manchester City injury situation during his post-game press conference. He told the media: “We are in trouble but I am not going to say ‘Oh, we have a lot of injuries’. It is what it is. With the players we have, we will go for it. As long as we have that mentality, that is good. We have five really important players injured and to sustain that for a long time would be difficult.”

Guardiola also told the media that Mateo Kovacic is closest to returning out of City’s injured players. He added: “Unfortunately it is a long time for Kevin. John didn’t play, it’s a little bit long. Maybe Kova is coming back. Jack maybe in a week or 10 days, but after he needs his condition.”

With Bernardo Silva added to City’s injury list it will be a stretch on the small squad at Pep Guardiola’s disposal. City’s manager had previously said he prefers working with a smaller squad, but 5 first-team players out with injury will represent a challenge for Guardiola.

If Kovacic does return for the weekend’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest it will be some good news for the champions.
