Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City side have become the embodiment of their manager. A team of immensely skilled players plays in their great manager’s image. This was on full display in their resounding 4-nil win over Fluminense in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
After Julian Alvarez scored in the first minute Manchester City was then faced with 15-20 minutes of quality possession football by the Copa Libertadores champions. While the European champions pressed their opponents the Brazilian side found their way through. It took the resolve that Pep Guardiola has instilled in his side to stand firm in the face of Fluminense’s pressure.
Once the treble winners scored their second goal of the night through a Nino own goal in the 27th minute there was only ever one winner. Pep Guardiola’s side had the initiative and it wouldn’t be relinquished as they ran out resounding victors.
All of the attributes that Guardiola has given his side were on full display. The willingness to work defensively from each player helped curtail Fernando Diniz’s side. It was no easy task to keep such an attacking side quiet but Manchester City did that.
They also showed their ruthless side to put away the South American champions. It is demanded by their manager and they showed it on the big stage. It had been strangely missing in recent Premier League fixtures. Draws against Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Crystal Palace had seen City throw away winning positions. But in Jeddah, there would be no such repeat. Once the World Champions had Fluminense in their grasp they wouldn’t let them back into the game as their manager demands.
This Manchester City team has become the embodiment of Pep Guardiola. This trait has now carried them to rarified air in footballing history.
