Phil Foden is thriving under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage

Manchester City’s young star Phil Foden is thriving under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola. Since making his first team debut in November 2017 the England international has developed more and more each year. This season has seen Foden start to take strides to become a permanent fixture in City’s midfield. His development in midfield was on display in a man-of-the-match performance in City’s 3-2 win over RB Leipzig.

Speaking with mancity.com following City’s thrilling UEFA Champions League win on Tuesday Foden praised his manager. He spoke of Guardiola’s attention to detail which has aided his development. Foden said: “He’s the best manager I could have asked for. His attention to detail – I’ve still got so many things that I want to get better at, especially playing in that role in midfield.”

The England international also admitted he was still learning what was required to play in midfield.  He added: “I need to be more alert in the defensive side and get my positions right – I know that and I’m trying my hardest to get better at it and improve.”

So far this season there have been glimpses of Foden as a midfielder. He put in a man-of-the-match display against Newcastle in City’s 1-nil win at the Etihad earlier this season. Since then he has mainly played on the right wing drifting inside on occasions. This season has seen Phil Foden mature as a player which has resulted in a higher level of consistency in his performances.

During the games he has played in midfield, it is obvious that Phil Foden’s future lies in midfield. Under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, it won’t be long before he becomes a fixture in the Manchester City midfield.
