What has stood out about Vitor Reis’ two performances in Manchester City’s two preseason friendlies is how much more confident and mature he is as a player. Reis spent last season on loan at Girona, and his time at Girona playing in La Liga has clearly accelerated his development.
Enzo Maresca faced the media after his team beat the K-League All-Stars 3-1 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. The Manchester City manager revealed that he has been impressed with Vitor Reis throughout Manchester City’s preseason. However, the Italian manager revealed that a decision on what the best move for the development of the Brazilian defender will come when the Manchester City squad returns to Manchester. Speaking on Vitor Reis, Maresca said: “Vitor is working very well. I am happy with him. The only thing is for most of the young players here with us, the plan is to finish pre-season and then take the final decision. And we will take the best decision for them, not just us.”
Is the best step for Vitor Reis to stay at Manchester City or spend another season out on loan?
Vitor Reis looks ready to play consistent football in the Premier League or at a top club. For his development as a player, Reis needs to be playing on a consistent basis. The Brazilian defender looms as the future of the Manchester City defence, so there is no chance that City will entertain selling Vitor Reis. That option is not on the table.
However, another loan move for Vitor Reis may be on the horizon. Enzo Maresca has hinted at this. The idea that Vitor Reis could be Manchester City’s fifth-choice centre-back this season does have merit. However, Reis may not play often enough to further grow as a defender if that were to occur. Perhaps a loan move to a Premier League club, or a club in the Champions League is the next step for Vitor Reis. That way he can further grow as a player before returning to Manchester City next season ready to become a key centre-back in City’s defence.

It is just a matter of when that will occur, whether this season or next, and if a loan move is again on the cards for Vitor Reis.
I think we both agree that he should stay as he seems to be the natural successor to John Stones. Remember the situation last January when we had to recall Alleyne from loan and buy Guehi. There are possibly up to 60 games to be played and injuries can pile up easily. Also Dias looks to be past his best and was slow on the turn and pursuit.
Perhaps Max Alleyne stays for that role could be a possibility. That is just a hypothetical scenario.
I would keep Reis and Alleyne. Both players have proved they are more than capable away from the club and have played well on tour. To me it makes no sense at all developing them further at another club.
I am more concerned with Maresco apparently continuing to be linked with Chelsea players.
This is totally irrational I know but has anyone else noticed the way he’s photographed wearing a City scarf? Its almost worn with disdain. Wrap it around your neck you pudding.
I’m not buying any of the Chelsea player links just yet. I want to see if there is anything to them first.
As for Alleyne and Reis my only concern would be would both sit and barely play? I think we must carry five cb’s, but six may be a stretch. I do think Reis, and Alleyne, for that matter will be key parts of our future I just wonder if both of them sitting barely playing is productive.
I agree that it does sound irrational. Enzo actually manipulated his departure from Chelsea because he wanted to come to the Etihad when City approached him in October. We lost Palmer and Sterling to Chelsea and We signed Kovacic and Lampard so I don’t think Enzo’s heart is at Stamford Bridge. Wearing a scarf in the hot summer is not comfortable for anyone
Wearing the scarf was intended as a symbolic gesture. It wasnt intended to keep the guy wrapped up against the arctic harsh conditions of a Manchester summer (sarcasm). It was purely for show.Incidentally air confitioning reached the north many years ago.
I hope the photographer scheduled a hydration break to ensure he survived the demanding session.
If the heat was unbearable for the few seconds it took to take the photograph lets hope he doesnt get to suffer Stoke on a wet wintry January night. He’ll be far too fragile.
