Manchester City look to have a decision to make on the future of a Dutch midfielder

Tijjani Reijnders faces an uncertain future at Manchester City. When Reijnders signed for City last summer from AC Milan, it was expected that he’d establish himself as a key member of the City midfield. Unfortunately, that isn’t what transpired during the 2025-26 season. Reijnders struggled to make a consistent impact for Pep Guardiola’s side and found himself on the periphery of City’s matchday squad during the back end of the season. Heading into the summer transfer window, Manchester City may have a decision to make on the Dutch international. Do they back Reijnders to come good or cash in on him? Perhaps who City sign this summer may dictate Reijnders’ future.

Atletico Madrid have registered their interest in signing Tijjani Reijnders.

Lyall Thomas has reported for Sky Sports that Atletico Madrid have registered their interest in signing Tijjani Reijnders. However, Thomas reports that Manchester City’s stance on selling the Dutch international is unknown. Furthermore, Thomas reports that Atletico Madrid are looking to strengthen their midfield this summer. They are looking to add an attack-minded midfielder to their squad, which is what Tijjani Reijnders is.

Who Manchester City sign this summer may dictate the future of Tijjani Reijnders.

Manchester City are in the market for midfielders this summer. The expectation is that Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson will eventually be signed by City. It also seems that City may be in the market for another midfielder, depending on the type of midfielder they sign in addition to Elliot Anderson, assuming the England international does land at the Etihad at some stage of the summer transfer window.

If Manchester City signs a midfielder who has similar strengths to Tijjani Reijnders, it is hard to see the Dutch international remaining at the club. Reijnders can be a very good player on his day. However, he hasn’t shown that on a consistent basis at City. If City can find an upgrade on Reijnders, if that is the type of midfielder they target, then they may let the Dutch international depart the club.

Tijjani Reijnders is one of a host of players who could leave Manchester City this summer. However, that may depend on whom City sign this summer. Atletico Madrid are poised to make a move for Reijnders if he is deemed surplus to requirements by the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders.

  1. Reijnders main issues are his shooting and his commitment. Too often he backs out of 50 50s. He doesn’t win duels. Creative midfielders for us still need to be combatative and he doesn’t fit the bill in that regard. He’s a very poor man’s Gundogan.

    1. Very good summing up and I would think if You and many others have noticed this from afar then those “on the bench” will assess it from close quarters and they will make the ultimate decision
