A key question for Manchester City may have an answer imminently

Throughout this season, doubts have emerged over the future of Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager. David Ornstein has previously reported for The Athletic that sources outside of City believed that the 2025/26 season could be Guardiola’s final season at City. From that point, Pep Guardiola’s future has become a hot topic. Almost weekly, it seems that with every answer or action Pep Guardiola provides, they could provide a clue about his future. Now a new report has indicated a potential timeline for when Guardiola will decide his future. Perhaps the questions surrounding Guardiola’s future may finally have an answer imminently.

Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to decide his Manchester City after this weekend’s Carabao Cup final.

Jack Gaughan has provided an update for the Daily Mail on when Pep Guardiola is set to make a decision over his future as Manchester City manager. Jack Gaughan reports that Guardiola is set to take time to consider what is best for him and Manchester City following Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal. Following Sunday’s cup final at Wembley the final international break of the season will get underway. Pep Guardiola will finally have time to make a decision on his as per Gaughan’s report. Lastly, Jack Gaughan adds that former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca could be a contender to take over from Guardiola if Pep does decide it is time to end his tenure as Manchester City manager.

Hopefully the doubts over Pep Guardiola’s future are removed and he sees this journey through with his new-look team.

It would appear that an answer on Pep Guardiola’s future may be coming. It does seem after Jack Gaughan’s report that the speculation surrounding Guardiola may be coming to an end. From a Manchester City point of view, City will be hoping that Guardiola sees out the final year of his contract. Looking at the situation and how this City team is growing, it would be fitting if Pep Guardiola sees out the journey with this team.

Although over the past fortnight Manchester City’s Champions League campaign has ended and their Premier League title hopes are hanging by a thread, you can see the steps this City team has taken. The team spirit is strong in this City side. That was an inescapable conclusion to draw after City fought for their lives against Real Madrid on Tuesday night with ten men. In a way, that is the hardest part of a team to build. It does seem that this Manchester City team is close to becoming a Pep Guardiola side. They should take another giant stride in their development next season. Pep Guardiola is the man to lead this team forward next season. He’s built it in his fighting image in a way. His players play for him and it wouldn’t feel right if Guardiola isn’t there next season to see the journey through.

Final thoughts.

A decision from Pep Guardiola over his future as Manchester City manager may come sooner rather than later. Hopefully, Guardiola decides that the journey with his new-look team isn’t yet complete. Pep Guardiola has given his all to City during his spell as manager. If he does decide to step away, he’s more than earned that right. But you do feel that the journey with this team playing under Pep Guardiola isn’t yet complete. It would be fitting if Guardiola can lead them to the top once again and re-establish Manchester City as a dominant force.

  1. I feel it’s imperative that Pep stays to ensure we return to the top at the earliest opportunity. A new manager would need time to evaluate and impose his ideas on the squad and this would delay progress.

    1. Agreed. I’m hoping Pep does one more season as this team is on the edge of becoming very good.

  2. Do you think he would announce it so soon or wait until the business for the season is finished? After what happened with Pellegrini it would be unwise or unnecessary to announce it soon. He said he would finish his contract to 2017 or maybe later so my money is on him doing just that as he is usually good as his word.
Unless some better replacement was available,,and no one comes to mind then I can’t see him being “pushed”.The talk of Maresco brings shudders to me.For his time here Pep is the innovator that others follow not the other way round. This is the season of the low block and set piece. Perhaps our biggest mistake is not to work on the latter .West Ham 1 corner 1 goal to our 19 corners for none. Our wingers get round the low block but cannot defend our lead. Otherwise this fledgeling side could actually be ahead of ordinary Arsenal.

    1. That I cannot answer but my personal belief is Pep will stay for at least another season. I just cannot see him walking away with this team so close to getting it so to speak.

On Maresca, I’m not convinced he’s the right man for the job. However, the club know him extremely well and how he operates. My hope is Pep stays and that story dissipates.

As for the set-pieces, training etc it must be remembered that this team, as Pep Guardiola mentioned, has very little time to train with games every 3/4 days. Most of their training time has been spent on recovery. With us out of the Champions League they will get the opportunity to train more which may see an improvement in that regard.

As for the West Ham goal, that lies on Donnarumma’s misjudgement imo than anything the team did wrong.

  3. Yes agreed and it was Donnarumma’s fault but Arsenal have had the same number of games and they have maximized their set pieces. Pep himself admitted he does not pay as much attention almost as if it is un sporting!. Next season, as you rightly say ,is where it will all pan out and there is really no other Club in the PL we really fear.

    1. I don’t care what Arsenal do and I’d rather Pep didn’t embrace that trend. What makes Pep so great and has done is his ability to win, a lot, his way. That’s why he’s regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time.

If we didn’t waste so many chances we’d be level on points, if not ahead of Arsenal. The issue with this team is their lack of potency for the lack of a better word in the final third. Not so much the lack of goals from set pieces. That should improve in time as the team matures and it tweaked a bit more.
