A viable midfield option is available for Pep Guardiola if Bernardo cannot play at Anfield

Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva missed his team’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United last night due to injury. Pep Guardiola revealed after his team booked a spot in the Carabao Cup final, where they’ll face Arsenal, that Bernardo Silva had sustained an injury during City’s 2-all draw with Tottenham. He further revealed that the City captain is in doubt for this weekend’s massive Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield.

If Bernardo cannot play against Arne Slot’s side, that would be a major blow for Pep Guardiola’s side. But as we saw last night against Newcastle, the City manager has a more than viable option to use in midfield if Bernardo Silva cannot play this Sunday.

Bernardo Silva is in doubt for Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Liverpool due to injury.

Pep Guardiola revealed after his team’s win over Newcastle that Bernardo Silva had sustained a hamstring injury. The Manchester City manager also said that City’s captain is in doubt for Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Explaining why Bernardo Silva missed last night’s match and if he is in doubt for Sunday’s massive match, Pep Guardiola said: “I don’t know (if Bernardo Silva will play against Liverpool) Bernardo is special. We’ll see. Yesterday he said he felt quite good and ‘I want to try’.

I don’t know. Of course in a position that is less dangerous than I would say the hamstring. It’s another type of muscle in his back but we’ll see in the next days.

‘Could be okay’ is not the words. He’s an incredible doubt. Knowing him he will try but right now I don’t know.

Pep Guardiola has a good option to employ in midfield at Anfield if Bernardo cannot play.

It would be a blow for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola if they are without Bernardo Silva for their upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield. The Manchester City captain is a vital component of Pep Guardiola’s side, and he will have a key role to play in a hostile environment at Anfield if he is indeed fit to play. But if Bernardo Silva cannot play against Liverpool, there is an option for him to use in midfield which we saw deployed last night.

The midfield pairing of Nico and Nico O’Reilly could be ideally suited to playing against Liverpool. Together, both players formed a strong midfield partnership against Newcastle United last night. Their games complement each other, and both players have the legs and athleticism to keep up with Liverpool’s midfield. That does seem like it could be a key factor in Sunday’s match at Anfield. If Bernardo Silva cannot start, or play, against Liverpool then the idea of starting Nico and Nico O’Reilly does have merit.

If the City captain cannot play on Sunday, then Nico and Nico O’Reilly may be the ideal pairing for Pep Guardiola to utilize in midfield based on their impressive showing last night against Newcastle.

  1. I can’t understand why Pep rates Silva so highly. He is over the hill, and he is easily dispossessed and his legs go after 60 minutes. We are better off without him, especially as he will be gone in the summer

    1. Watch his performance against Newcastle in the first-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tie. He was a big reason as to why we had a 2-nil lead heading into the second-leg.

Bernardo understands Pep’s system more than any other player. Yes he’s getting on, but he’s still vitally important to our style of play.We aren’t better without him, as the same second half frailties were there against Newcastle as they were against Spurs and Bernardo wasn’t on the pitch.

This team is still learning the ropes so those fluctuations in performance will occur. It’s all part of the growing pains but the path this team is on is clear to see. In the case of Bernardo, he is key in showing the new players the ropes before he likely leaves in the summer.
