Are all signs pointing to a City move for a Newcastle United midfielder in January?

Are signs beginning to suggest that a Newcastle midfielder could be City bound in January?

It appears that it could be a busy January transfer window for Manchester City. The areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad that need strengthening appear obvious. Upgrading City’s midfield appears to be Manchester City’s biggest priority next month. One player who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City is Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. As new reports emerge of City’s interest in the Brazilian international are we beginning to get signs that he could arrive at the Etihad next month? Guimaraes appears open to the move based on a new report.

Paul Hirst and Constantin Ecker have reported for the Times that Manchester City want to sign ‘a flexible midfielder’ next month. Players such as Florian Wirtz, Adam Wharton, Ederson and Martin Zubimendi are included as potential City targets. Another player who is named as a potential target for Manchester City in the report is Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

But what stands out in the Times report is that it is reported that Guimaraes is reportedly open to a move to Manchester City either next month or next summer. With Pep Guardiola’s side in the market for a midfielder, the fact that Guimaraes is open to moving to the Etihad could play into City’s hands. But there is another factor that could aid any potential push from Manchester City to sign Guimaraes.

Newcastle United do appear to be facing issues in regards to the Premier League’s PSR regulations. Eddie Howe told the media last week that his team may have to sell players if they want to spend money next month. Newcastle’s plight on that front could well play into Manchester City’s hands.

If Bruno Guimaraes is the player Manchester City want January may be the ideal time for them to strike.

There is no doubt that Bruno Guimaraes would add steel, energy and quality to Manchester City’s midfield. Those traits have been lacking in City’s midfield since Rodri went down with an ACL injury. As much as Pep Guardiola claims publicly that City’s squad doesn’t need reinforcing it does. That is plain to see.

But there could be a perfect storm on the horizon that may aid City’s cause in signing Bruno Guimaraes. First, as per the Telegraph’s report, he is open to moving to the world champions next month. Newcastle’s PSR situation is the other one. If they need to sell to buy players and avoid any PSR issues then City could pounce to add a player who’d immediately strengthen their squad. Manchester City almost owe it to themselves to seize upon the opportunity on offer if it does help them land Bruno Guimaraes.

It does appear that all of a sudden, Manchester City could have a realistic shot at landing Bruno Guimaraes. If he is the player they believe can improve their midfield then they must take advantage of the situation at hand. They can’t afford to stand still in the market once again. That much is clear.
