Manchester City’s midfield general is aiming to get back this season

At this stage, it looks like Rodri will be out for the remainder of this season. Manchester City’s midfield general ruptured his ACL during his team’s 2-all draw with Arsenal in September. The timeframe involved with the recovery from an ACL injury suggests that we won’t see Rodri back on the pitch until next season. It has been a huge blow for Pep Guardiola’s side to lose their most influential player for such a prolonged period. But in a new interview, Manchester City’s midfield general is aiming to return later this season. That may be optimistic but it shows just how determined Rodri is to return this season.

In an interview with the The Rest is Football podcast which was relayed by ESPN Rodri explained that he has set himself a goal of returning this season. He explained: “My target is to come back this season. I think in terms of my mentality it’s going to be positive for me to not give up the season and throw it. I don’t want to run, you know, I don’t want to make mistakes. But yeah, that’s my mentality. I don’t know when … In my target is six, seven months, but the physios, they will dictate.

There is nothing wrong with the positive outlook Rodri displayed in his recent interview. He faces a long road back to the pitch after the serious knee injury he suffered. But by setting himself a goal of returning this season it does give him something to aim for. That is never a bad thing in such a situation.

But as Rodri cautioned Manchester City’s medical staff will dictate when he can return. That is the right course of action to take with such a serious knee injury. It would a huge lift for Manchester City this season if Rodri did somehow return this season. But it’s more important that he makes a full recovery from such a serious injury. That’s the bigger priority out of the situation surrounding Manchester City’s midfield general.

It is good to see Rodri has set himself a goal to come back this season. But whenever he returns as long as he fully fit and recovered from the serious injury he sustained that is more important then when he returns.
