Is one of the biggest problems for Manchester City about to be solved?

Manchester City have faced several problems of late. An injury crisis has robbed the champions of their early season momentum. The hope is that City’s players will return after the current international break to alleviate that issue. City’s legal ‘battles’ have dominated headlines over recent days. Hopefully, the end is in sight to City’s legal ‘battles’ with the Premier League. The other has been the doubt of Pep Guardiola’s future. Until that is resolved an air of uncertainty does follow Pep Guardiola and his team. But a new report indicates that Guardiola has agreed to a new one-year extension to his contract. If that is the case that is massive news for the world champions.

Wayne Veysey has reported for Football Insider that Pep Guardiola has reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City over a one-year contract extension. Veysey adds that recent talks between Manchester City and Guardiola has seen a new deal edge closer to completion. Furthermore, Veysey reports that Guardiola’s contract extension will see him remain Manchester City’s manager until the summer of 2026. Lastly, Veysey adds that the deal is ‘99% done’ and an official announcement is expected soon.

If Pep Guardiola has agreed on a one-year extension it will remove the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Veysey’s report is good news for Manchester City on several fronts. First, if Guardiola does agree on a new deal it completely removes the speculation surrounding his future. That allows City and their manager to move forward this season with one of the biggest ‘problems’ surrounding the club solved. That would be welcome news.

The other is it would allow Manchester City to begin the rebuilding of their squad next summer with Guardiola as manager. Even if Guardiola only signs a one-year extension he can be the manager to begin the rebuild of Manchester City’s squad. In my opinion, Guardiola is the perfect manager to begin that task. If City can get next summer’s transfer window right it would allow Guardiola to set the template for his successor to follow. The hope is that player-wise the first steps of City’s squad rebuild can be in place from next summer and beyond. With Guardiola as manager, I believe that City can get that right as they build what they hope will be the squad to take the club into their next era of success.

Wayne Veysey’s report that Pep Guardiola is close to agreeing on a new deal with Manchester City is welcome news. If the report is proven correct then one of the biggest ‘problems’ surrounding Manchester City may be solved. That would be a massive boost for the world champions. The hope is that Veysey’s report is proven correct and Guardiola does sign an extension with Manchester City.
