Does the situation surrounding Pep Guardiola require a speedy resolution?

At the moment there is an air of uncertainty surrounding Manchester City. City’s legal ‘battle’ with the Premier League is currently underway. That brings with it its own uncertainty. But perhaps the biggest question mark surrounding the world champions is the future of manager Pep Guardiola. With City having lost their past three games in all competitions to Tottenham, Bournemouth and Sporting does Pep Guardiola’s future require a speedy resolution? Perhaps it does so the club can begin to plan for the future with a concrete plan in place.

Firstly, it must be said that the future of Pep Guardiola doesn’t appear to be the cause of Manchester City’s current plight. There are a multitude of reasons as to why City have lost their past three games. Tottenham, Bournemouth and Sporting have all deserved to beat City. Injuries and unfit players have also severely depleted the world champions. With that out of the way, Pep Guardiola’s future does appear to need to be resolved so the club and Pep can either move on together or begin planning for his departure.

There is no indication currently that Pep Guardiola is close to leaving Manchester City. Every time he speaks, you get the impression he is determined to continue on with his club. It was clear after hearing City’s manager speak after their 4-1 defeat to Sporting that Guardiola is up for the fight ahead. In my opinion, signs are there that Pep Guardiola appears set to remain at Manchester City. A new report also gives that impression.

Manchester City aren’t in talks with any other managers.

Fabrizio Romano has reported on his official YouTube channel that City are confident that Pep Guardiola will extend his stay at Manchester City. Furthermore, Romano reported that City aren’t in advanced talks with any other managers. Speaking on the subject Romano said: “Man City maintain their confidence to keep Pep Guardiola at the club. Still they’re waiting for an official answer from Pep and this is still the case, so still they’re waiting for Pep to inform them of what he wants to do next. But internally at Manchester City, they still believe there is a good chance to continue with Pep Guardiola beyond this year. So Manchester City in this moment are not in advanced conversation with any manager.

A resolution appears needed so Manchester City and Pep Guardiola have clarity on the situation.

If Pep Guardiola intends to stay at Manchester City the quicker he signs a new deal the better. It will allow the club and Guardiola to plan for the future. With Hugo Viana set to replace Txiki Begiristain as City’s director of football next summer it would also give Viana the opportunity to plan for City’s future with Pep Guardiola as manager.

But if Guardiola decides to call time on his City career then he deserves to be celebrated. He has earned that right through his deeds at Manchester City. Also the champions would have the necessary time to assess the field and find a suitable manager to replace Guardiola. That is no easy task and City won’t want to be rushed into a decision on who replaces Guardiola.

The sooner Pep Guardiola’s future is resolved the better it will be for Manchester City. It would remove one piece of uncertainty that surrounds the club. Surely that would be best for all concerned. Time will tell if that is how the entire situation plays out.
