Tottenham 2 (Timo Werner 5′, Pape Matar Sarr 25′)

Here are the City player ratings as Manchester City went out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in a pulsating Cup tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Goals in the opening 25 minutes from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr gave Spurs the early advantage. Matheus Nunes pulled a goal back for City on the stroke of halftime. That set the game up for an entertaining second half.

The second half was an end to end affair. Stefan Ortega made a string of stunning saves to keep his team in the tie. Manchester City’s best chance to equalise fell to Nico O’Reilly right at the death. But his superb volley was denied by a spectacular goal lipne clearance from Yves Bissouma.

Manchester City went out of the Carabao Cup with the defeat. But the biggest story to come out of the game were the injuries suffered by Manuel Akanji and Savinho. That is the biggest issue coming out of the game for the world champions besides the defeat.

Here are the City player ratings from a pulsating cup tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

City player ratings

Stefan Ortega-9/10: Made several stunning saves in the second half to keep his team in the game. A great performance from Ortega.

Rico Lewis-7.5/10: Lewis played well once again at right-back.

John Stones-7/10: Got through the game unscathed and played well at the back.

Ruben Dias- 6/10: Wasn’t named in the original starting lineup but came on when Akanji went out with a late injury. Wasn’t at his best before being substituted.

Nathan Ake- 6.5/10: Did what he to do  without being a standout performer. More important,ly he got through the game unscathed.

Ilkay Gundogan- 6/10: Not at his best once again. Got into some nice positions at times but couldn’t affect the game as he would’ve liked.

James McAtee-6.5/10: Showed some touches of genius at times but couldn’t get into the game as he would’ve liked.

Nico O’Reilly-7.5/10: I thought O’Reilly was outstanding. Almost scored a late equaliser but was denied by a spectacular goal line clearance.

Savinho-7.5/10: Set up Matheus Nunes’s goal with a great piece of play. Unfortunately substituted with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury.

Matheus Nunes-8.5/10: Nunes was brilliant once again. Scored a goal and was Manchester City’s most dangerous player over the 90 minutes.

Phil Foden-6.5/10: Got into some nice positions but couldn’t take full advantage of them before being substituted.

Substitutes

Josko Gvardiol- 5.5/10: Gets a lower grade due to his poor throw-in that nearly gifted Richarlison a goal. Offered a threat going forward after coming on.

Mateo Kovacic-7/10: A composed performance in midfield from Kovacic.

Bernardo Silva-7/10: As usual Bernardo was busy after coming on as a substitute.

Jacob Wright-6.5/10: Wright showed plenty after coming off the bench. Saw one shot go just wide and wasted another good opportunity. He has a role to play due to all the injuries Manchester City are facing.

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey-N/A: Not on long enough to mark but did show some quality in his time on the pitch. Will likely be needed in the coming weeks and looks ready for the opportunity.

  1. A matter of opinion I know but for me Ortega could have done better with their second goal. He did make some great saves though.
