No matter what happens with City’s captain’s future his contribution to the club should never be forgotten

Although it’s only mid-October, the future of Kyle Walker has become the topic of speculation. Phil Thomas has reported for the Sun that Walker is attracting interest from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli. But no matter what happens with City’s captain’s future his contribution to the club should never be forgotten.

It isn’t a stretch to say Kyle Walker has started this season slowly. A long summer at the European Championships with England saw City’s captain have a delayed start to the new campaign. When Walker has played he looked like Father Time is catching up to him. A recent article from Robert Calcutt for talkSPORT shows that Walker is ranked as the 80th quickest player in the Premier League. Calcutt’s article also highlights that Walker was the Premier League’s quickest player as recently as the 22/23 season. The statistics back up the eye test that Walker appears to be slowing down. During City’s 3-2 win over Fulham a fortnight ago Walker was beaten for pace by Adama Traore. That moment stood out.

But if Kyle Walker is losing his battle with Father Time his contribution to Manchester City shouldn’t be forgotten. City’s captain’s contribution to City’s recent dominance has been immense. Without Walker, it is doubtful that Pep Guardiola’s side would have become the dominant force it now is. Since arriving at the club from Tottenham, Walker has further enhanced his reputation as one of, if not the best right-back in the history of the Premier League. It isn’t a stretch to say that Walker may go down as one of Pep Guardiola’s best signings during his time at Manchester City.

Kyle Walker has started this season slowly. There are reasons for that. But if he is losing his battle with Father Time as everyone does, he should be remembered for what he has contributed to Manchester City’s recent dominance. He has earned that right. But it would be foolish to write Kyle Walker off this season. Walker still has a vital role to play this season for the world champions. Based on what he has achieved at the club it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him rise once again.
