It has become apparent so far this season that Rico Lewis has taken his game to another level. He has been one of Manchester City’s best players during the early stages of this season. Lewis put in another brilliant last night during City’s 4-nil Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava. But what is becoming apparent each time Lewis takes the pitch is just how special a player he is.
There is an intelligence to the game of Rico Lewis that is well beyond his years. Since bursting onto the scene during the 22/23 season, that trait always stands out in Lewis’ game. That level of tactical knowledge allows him to play and thrive in some of the most demanding roles for Manchester City. Playing as an inverted full-back takes exceptional tactical and technical ability. Lewis has this in spades which shows through every time he is on the pitch.
He also has the technical ability to go with his exceptional intelligence. That ability sees the England international thrive in any role he plays for Pep Guardiola. Last night Lewis played in a midfield trio with Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden. He was arguably the standout performer for Manchester City last night alongside Phil Foden. That is one of the biggest compliments you can pay the performance of Rico Lewis last night. He stood out in City’s midfield, which is filled with world-class performers. Perhaps an even bigger compliment you can pay Lewis is the ball he played for Erling Haaland to score Manchester City’s third of the night was straight out of Kevin De Bruyne’s playbook.

But more importantly every time you see Rico Lewis play you realise just how special a player he is. This season he has shown that on more than one occasion. His performance last night against Slovan Bratislava is just further proof what a special player Manchester City have in their ranks.
