There can be no doubt about the importance of Rodri to Manchester City. City’s midfield general has proven this time and time again during his time at the club. Now a new report indicates that the champions are determined to agree on a new deal with the Spanish international. But the threat of Real Madrid making a move for Rodri does look in the background.
Sam Lee has reported for The Athletic that Manchester City are trying to get Rodri to sign a new contract. Furthermore, Lee reports that the champions are prepared to make Rodri one of the highest-paid players at the club, alongside Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. Lee further reports that City wants to have Rodri signed on a new deal before he reaches the final two years of his current contract. Sam Lee adds in his report that Real Madrid has an interest in one day signing one of City’s most important players. Lee also reports that Real Madrid can’t afford to match Rodri’s salary offer from Manchester City nor can they afford the transfer fee that City would demand. Lastly, Lee reports that Real Madrid is waiting on the outcome of Manchester City’s current hearing over 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules to see if that makes a move for Rodri easier to complete in the future.
The threat of Rodri leaving Manchester City anytime soon doesn’t appear to be a realistic possibility.
It is no surprise to see Real Madrid credited with an interest in Rodri. The Spanish international is one of, if not the best midfielder in the game. His performances for both Manchester City and Spain validate his status in the game. But despite Real Madrid reportedly having an interest in signing Rodri there doesn’t appear to be any indication that he will be looking to leave the world champions anytime soon.

Rodri himself has not indicated that he is unhappy at Manchester City. He is a low-maintenance player and appears to be enjoying life playing under Pep Guardiola and with the world champions. The Spanish international was asked earlier today if there was any progress on a new contract with the world champions. He told the media: “Nothing much to say. I have three more years at Man City, and when I sign the contract I don’t think of other teams, I just think of finishing. So I have three more years at Man City and nothing more to say.”
Rodri’s own comments appear to play down any chances of him leaving City anytime soon. Sam Lee’s report further validates that fact. The hope is that City’s midfield general will agree on a new contract with the world champions sometime shortly. But with three years left on his current deal, there isn’t any urgent need for a deal to be completed. Rodri doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to leave Manchester City. He just appears to be focused on his football and the rest will one day take care of itself.
