Is a young superstar one day bound for the Etihad? The clues are there if you look deep enough

One player who has been linked with a potential move to Manchester City in recent days is young superstar Jamal Musiala. Charlie Parker-Turner reported yesterday for The Express that the champions have an interest in signing Musiala and his German international teammate Florian Wirtz. There is a lot to play out before the champions move for either player next summer. But in the case of Jamal Musiala is the young playmaker one day bound for the Etihad? That possibility can’t be discounted at this stage.

Here is a look at a host of recent reports on Manchester City’s interest in the German international. Do the clues point to City one day landing one of the emerging superstars in the game? That depends on a multitude of factors. But it is looming as a possibility based on several reports over the past few months.

Jamal Musiala was first reported as a target for Manchester City earlier this year.

In April this year, Jacob Steinberg reported for the Guardian that Jamal Musiala was emerging as a future target for Manchester City. Furthermore, Steinberg also reported that City’s interest in Musiala was advanced. Steinberg also reported that Chelsea are also monitoring the situation surrounding the Bayern Munich star. It was also reported by Steinberg that Musiala was a target for Manchester City last summer. But that move didn’t materialise as the champions had a quiet summer transfer window.

German football expert Christian Falk has also reported on City’s potential interest in Musiala. Falk reported via his Daily Briefing column in late July that City sees Musiala as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. Furthermore, Falk reported that Musiala also has one eye on a potential move to the Premier League. Lastly, Falk reports that Bayern do have an eye on making a move for Florian Wirtz next summer. That reported move could potentially see Musiala decide his future lies away from Bayern Munich.

The chances of Jamal Musiala landing at the Etihad aren’t as far-fetched as it seems.

The contract situation surrounding Jamal Musiala is the one thing to watch regarding his future. Mark Brus has relayed comments from Fabrizio Romano for CaughtOffside that Bayern Munich is pushing hard to tie Jamal Musiala down on a new deal. The German international is contracted with Bayern Munich until 2026. But the longer Musiala’s contract situation remains unresolved the more it plays into Manchester City’s or any other clubs hands in regards to a potential move for Musiala. Bayern will not want to enter the 2025 summer transfer window with Musiala only having a year left on his contract. That could force them to contemplate selling their prized asset or risk losing him for free a year later. If that situation does arise next summer that would increase the chances of Musiala potentially landing at the Etihad.

Summary

There are enough clues there that suggest that Manchester City are plotting a swoop for Jamal Musiala. The champions are well known for planning their major transfer market moves well in advance. A move for Musiala is one that would take some planning from Manchester City to pull off. Bayern Munich would not want to lose one of their prized assets and he wouldn’t come cheap. But if Musiala does decide to seek a new challenge that choice may be taken out of their hands.

Musiala’s contract situation is what will dictate his future. That is the first clue to watch for in regards to a possible City move for the German international. If he enters next summer’s transfer window with only a year left on his current contract then the chances of Manchester City or any other club moving for Musiala increase. If he signs a new deal with Bayern then the champions will move onto other targets.

But the clues do point towards City trying to bring Musiala to the Etihad. Whether or not they can pull that move off is something that won’t be known for sometime.
