Phil Foden withdraws from the England squad due to illness

After being selected for international duty by England Phil Foden has been forced to withdraw from the England squad. The news of Foden’s withdrawal from Lee Carsley’s squad was confirmed yesterday.

An announcement on the official Three Lions website confirmed that Foden will not take part in England’s UEFA Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland. The announcement also confirmed that Foden didn’t report for international duty. The announcement further adds that the recent illness that Foden has been suffering from has forced his withdrawal from international duty. Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins have also dropped out of Lee Carsley’s squad.

Phil Foden now has time to recover from the illness he has been suffering from after his withdrawal from international duty. The midfielder has missed City’s past two games due to illness. With a chance to rest the hope is he be at full fitness for City’s Premier League clash with Brentford following the international break.

The news of Foden’s withdrawal from international duty isn’t a major surprise. Pep Guardiola had told the media following his team’s win over West Ham that he expected Foden to play no part in England’s upcoming fixtures.

There is, however, a silver lining for Manchester City. They no longer have to worry about the condition Phil Foden could return to the club in. That is a positive for the world champions. Foden can recover from illness and hopefully return when Manchester City’s fixture list ramps up next month.
