An injury to Mateo Kovacic was the only bad news from Manchester City’s win over Ipswich Town

Yesterday Manchester City picked up their second win of the Premier League season with a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town. A hat trick from Erling Haaland powered Pep Guardiola’s side to an impressive win. However, there was some bad news for the champions to come out of yesterday’s game. Mateo Kovacic picked up a hip injury and had be to substituted after 50 minutes. That was the only sour note from City’s first home game of the season.

The Croatian international picked up the injury following a robust challenge from Liam Delap just after halftime. There wasn’t any malice in the challenge from Delap it was more of an unfortunate incident. But Mateo Kovacic had to be replaced by John Stones after trying to play through the injury.

Pep Guardiola provided a brief update on the injury suffered by Kovacic post-game during his post-game press conference. He told the media: “I didn’t speak with the doctors. I think it was a knock. Liam Delap, we know from here, is so aggressive with that. We have six, seven days until the next game, and we will see if he can recover.

It was a cruel blow to see Mateo Kovacic substituted due to injury. He has started the season in fine form and man-of-the-match in City’s opening weekend win over Chelsea. He was playing well yesterday at the Etihad before injury struck. But based on Pep Guardiola’s assessment of the injury the hope is that the Croatian international can take his place in the starting lineup against West Ham next weekend.
