At long last an England international is set to depart Manchester City which is best for both parties

Across this summer, it had appeared that the future of Kalvin Phillips lay away from Manchester City. Despite putting in two good performances during City’s last two pre-season friendlies in the United States Phillips has always looked destined for an exit from Manchester City. Now it appears only a matter of time before a loan deal for the England international to head to Ipswich Town is made official. In reality that is the best move for both Phillips and Manchester City this season.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported via X that Kalvin Phillips completed a medical with Ipswich Town yesterday. Furthermore, Romano adds that the loan move is expected to be made official over the weekend. Romano has also reported that Phillips’s loan move to Ipswich Town from Manchester City doesn’t include a buy option. Despite this fact, it remains the best move for Manchester City and the England international.

Kalvin Phillips has endured a disappointing time at Manchester City since arriving at the club from Leeds United. He failed to establish himself in Pep Guardiola’s squad as he failed to adjust to the demands of playing for Manchester City. He spent the second half of the 23/24 season on loan at West Ham. But he endured a frustrating time at the Hammers which meant the list of suitors for him this summer was relatively small. A move to newly promoted Ipswich may be the best thing for the career of the England international. He should get regular first-team football as he bids to resurrect his career.

From a Manchester City point of view, they have successfully secured Phillips a move this summer. That frees up space in their squad to potentially sign a midfielder to support Rodri. Phillips had been earmarked for the role but he hasn’t grasped the opportunity that was on offer. Now the champions  focus on that hunt without having to simultaneously sort out the future of the England international. That is the best move for both Phillips and the club.

At long last it appears to be only a matter of time before Kalvin Phillips departs Manchester City for the 24/25 season. That is the best move for him and the Premier League champions. The hope is now that Kalvin Phillips can relaunch his career after a frustrating time at Manchester City.
