With the departure of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid now confirmed it seems that the time is now for Manchester City to strike in the transfer market. The departure of the World Cup winner has left a sizable void in Pep Guardiola’s squad. It appears that the world champions will now need to fill that void before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. That has now become a pressing need based on the departure of Alvarez.
The only major arrival for Manchester City this summer has been that of Savinho. Based on his display against Manchester United on Saturday the Brazilian international looks to be a shrewd addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. But could should he be the only arrival at the Etihad this summer? He isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Alvarez. The Brazilian winger is a vastly different type of player to the newly departed striker. That could an area of concern for the champions.
Could Manchester City enter next season with Erling Haaland as their only striker? That possibility could eventuate. City has previously prospered playing with a false 9 in the past. Could Pep Guardiola revisit that this season? It could be a realistic scenario now. But that was several seasons ago now and Pep Guardiola’s tactics seem to have evolved past that move. That doesn’t mean he won’t revisit them but his team may have moved past that tactical iteration now.
With the departure of Julian Alvarez now confirmed it seems that the time for Manchester City to make a mark in the transfer market is now. They do appear to need a replacement for Alvarez. There is also the need for quality support for Rodri to be addressed. It could be a busy few weeks for the world champions. But it does feel like they now need to make a mark on the market to complete Pep Guardiola’s squad for the 24/25 season.
