Across this summer the possibility that Ederson has played his last game for Manchester City was on the cards. At times it seemed that the Brazilian international could depart City for the Saudi Pro League. Fortunately for Manchester City, that didn’t happen, and they are set to enter next season with Ederson in goal. He is one of City’s most important players and that was full display in Manchester City’s FA Community Shield win over Manchester United at Wembley yesterday.
Throughout yesterday’s game, the importance of Ederson was on full display. While he didn’t have any major saves to make his ability in possession was once again vital to Ci. The ability of the Brazilian with the ball at his feet is crucial to Pep Guardiola’s side. At times, he resembles an extra midfielder, and he showed that yesterday. But there was another key ability of Ederson’s that was on full display yesterday, and it was crucial to City’s victory.
During the penalty shootout that Manchester City won 7-6, Ederson made one vital save from Jadon Sancho. That save kept City in the shootout. He also stepped up to take City’s fifth penalty and beat Andre Onana with ease. There are strikers in the world game who would kill for Ederson’s ability from the spot. His poise from the penalty spot was crucial to Manchester City’s triumph.

After a summer of uncertainty surrounding his future Ederson ended that yesterday. Speaking with ESPN Brasil following City’s win City’s number one keeper announced that he would be staying at the club for next season. Speaking after the game he said: “It’s over. I spoke with some players, the coach, director, everyone. I talked to my family and it was a joint decision. We’ll stay more years at City. The media says many things, sometimes inventing a little more. But I’ve already decided my future, especially after the conversation I had with Guardiola. This season, I’m totally focused at City with my teammates in search of more titles.”
Ederson’s post-game statement is great news for Manchester City. His performance yesterday showed just how vital he is to Pep Guardiola’s side. Heading into the 24/25 season it is welcome news for Manchester City that Ederson will be a part of the world champions chase for even more silverware.
