As the summer unfolds one of the more consistent stories has been the future of City’s number-one keeper Ederson. By this point, it is well-known that Saudi Pro League clubs have an interest in signing the Brazilian international. Now a new report has emerged detailing why Ederson is considering his future at the world champions. Based on the new report a speedy resolution is needed both for Manchester City and their goalkeeper.
Sam Lee has reported for the Athletic on the situation surrounding Ederson’s future. According to Lee’s report, the Brazilian international was close to signing a contract extension with Manchester City in March. But by the end of last season, the situation had changed Lee further reports. Lee adds that the praise Stefan Ortega received for his crucial save against Tottenham last season affected City’s number-one keeper. Furthermore, Sam Lee adds that Ederson would prefer to move to a European club this summer rather than the Saudi Pro League and Al-Ittihad. But as it stands only clubs from the Saudi Pro League can afford a potential deal for the Brazilian keeper. Lastly, Lee adds that City won’t sell Ederson unless their valuation is met.
This situation needs a speedy resolution so Manchester City and Ederson can move on.
The more the current situation drags on in regards to Ederson’s future the worse it is for everyone involved. If he does depart then City will need time to find a suitable replacement. That is obvious. There is also another point to consider in the whole scenario.
Ederson has been one of Manchester City’s most important players since he arrived at the club from Benfica. He has been an absolutely critical component of City’s era of dominance during Pep Guardiola’s reign. There is an argument to be made that he is arguably Manchester City’s greatest-ever goalkeeper. His performance in the 22/23 UEFA Champions League final win over Inter Milan will go down in City folklore. If he has played his last game at the club and does leave this summer he deserves to leave with the respect and adulation his contribution to Manchester City deserves. He has earned that right.
The situation surrounding Ederson’s future needs a speedy resolution. As per Sam Lee’s report if he is to leave City for Al-Ittihad then hopefully a deal is completed relatively quickly. That way the champions can find a replacement and Ederson can leave with his standing at Manchester City intact. The Brazilian keeper deserves that privilege given what he has contributed to Manchester City. Or if he stays at the champions then he and the club can move on and prepare for the 24/25 season. All scenarios are possible at this stage but hopefully, a resolution will be reached sooner rather than later.
