Across this summer Manchester City has sold several young players for sizable transfer fees. It is shrewd business by the champions as it maintains a steady flow of transfer revenue coming into the club. With that in mind are Manchester City set to sell Yan Couto to Borussia Dortmund shortly? A new report suggests that the Bundesliga side is eager to sign the Brazilian international.
Fabrizio Romano has reported via X that Borussia Dortmund have made contact with Manchester City in regards to a potential move for Yan Couto. Furthermore, Romano reports that Dortmund do not intend to meet City’s asking price of €40 million for Couto. Lastly, Romano adds that Dortmund intends on paying €20/25 million for the Brazilian full-back who is keen on the move according to Romano’s report.
It is becoming apparent that the future of Yan Couto lies away from the Etihad.
As the summer transfer window unfolds it is beginning to become clear that the future of Yan Couto lies away from Manchester City. Based on his form for Girona last season he did appear to be a player that could be in contention to replace Kyle Walker at right-back for the world champions. But that possibility now appears to be remote based on Dortmund’s reported interest in signing Couto. That appears to be one factor in deciding the future of the young full-back. There is also another that seems to point at Couto leaving Manchester City this summer.
It also appears that Couto’s game isn’t suited to a role in Pep Guardiola’s squad. He is a traditional Brazilian full-back who excels going forward. But he can be exposed at the back. That appears to be a hindrance to any chance of Yan Couto making it at Manchester City. Pep Guardiola doesn’t appear to need another attacking right-back at this stage. That could change but Couto’s doesn’t appear suited to a role in the City squad. If that is the case then a permanent move for the young Brazilian international may be best for him and Manchester City.
A move to Borussia Dortmund may be best for Yan Couto and Manchester City. But as Romano’s report suggests there is a large gap between each clubs valuation of the player. If that can be resolved then a move to the Bundesliga may be on the cards for Couto. It will give him the opportunity to further progress in his career. But it will also see City rake in more transfer revenue for a promising young player. That appears to be the ideal scenario going forward for both parties.
