That does appear to be a realistic possibility based on what he has already shown at Manchester City.

He thrived as an inverted full-back. The intelligence of Lewis also allowed him to become a useful option in midfield in City’s build-up play. The roles that Lewis has been asked to play by Pep Guardiola have been ones that more experienced players have struggled with. It is clear that Rico Lewis is destined for big things in the game.

A move into midfield may be key in Lewis establishing himself as a key player at Manchester City. In an interview with Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail Rico Lewis spoke of his desire to one day play in midfield. Lewis told Gaughan he sees himself one day playing in midfield. He told Jack Gaughan: “In my head, I want to be more of a No 8. A bit more attacking. You have to make a decision about what kind of player you want to be. Maybe it’s an age thing wanting to be more involved in assisting and scoring. Games are mostly won and lost in midfield.

Based on his goals and talent it looks like Rico Lewis is destined to play in midfield. Whether that is next season or further down the track remains to be seen.
