Manchester City are now linked with a Newcastle winger but is it a necessary move for City?

As the transfer window begins to stir Manchester City has been linked with a host of players this summer. The latest to be linked with the world champions is Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon. A new report suggests City could potentially move for the England international this summer. But is a move for Gordon likely from Manchester City? That doesn’t appear to be likely on closer inspection.

Wayne Veysey has reported for footballinsider247.com that Manchester City have joined the race to sign Anthony Gordon. Veysey also reports that Liverpool are also interested in the Newcastle winger. It is also reported by Veysey that City are in the market for a ‘lethal’ winger. Furthermore, Veysey reports that Anthony Gordon’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 25/26 season.

Anthony Gordon is a quality player but a Manchester City move for the winger appears unlikely.

There is no doubting the quality of Anthony Gordon. He had a tremendous 23/24 season for Newcastle. Gordon scored 12 goals and added 11 assists for Eddie Howe’s side last season. That form earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s European Championships. It has also caught the eye of Manchester City and Liverpool as per Veysey’s new report. But is Gordon a player Manchester City need and will make a move for? That doesn’t appear likely due to several factors.

The first problem with any potential City move for Gordon is the position he plays. Gordon primarily plays on the left wing. As it stands currently Pep Guardiola’s squad has Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish who can operate on City’s left-hand side. Unless one of those were to leave the champions this summer it doesn’t appear that the Newcastle winger would have an immediate role in Guardiola’s squad. The champions do appear in need of a right winger but they seem to have found a player to fill that role.

As previously reported by Fabrizio Romano Manchester City has completed a deal to sign Savio from Troyes. The Brazilian international looks to be a player who could slot in on the right wing for City. If that proves to be the case then a Manchester City move for Anthony Gordon appears unlikely. Gordon can play on the right wing but he is primarily a left winger as seen in his performances last season.

There is no doubting the quality of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon. But on closer inspection, he doesn’t look to a player that the champions will be desperate to sign. While that could change for now a Manchester City move for the England international appears unlikely.
