One of the stories to watch for this summer has been the future of Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. In an interview with Belgian publication HLN at the beginning of June, De Bruyne had appeared open to the prospect of moving to the Saudi Pro League. But in a new interview it appears that the Manchester City midfielder could be set to remain at the world champions for next season.
In an interview with Belgian publication HBVL, De Bruyne explained that he has never expressed an interest in leaving Manchester City. He explained: “I’ve read a lot of headlines about a transfer (to the Saudi Pro League), but I haven’t spoken to anyone. Yes. I saw him at the Club World Cup. I know Michael – then it makes sense for us to have a chat. But it wasn’t about that (transfer). I signed my contract at the right time. If there’s a good offer and you tell Pep that you want to leave, that is possible. This may be different at other clubs. But I have never indicated that I want to leave.”
De Bruyne was also asked if it is expected that he remains at the Etihad for next season. He answered: “Yes, yes.”
Kevin De Bruyne’s comments appear to end any speculation surrounding his future.
Based on Kevin De Bruyne’s recent comments it appears that the Manchester City club legend is set to remain at the club for next season. If that proves to be the case it would be a massive bonus to the Premier League champions. The Manchester City midfielder has been in scintillating form for Belgium at Euro 24. He has carried his strong form from the second half of Manchester City’s successful 23/24 season into the European Championships. Based on his displays for Belgium it appears that De Bruyne could be set for a big 24/25 season.
But there is also another positive for the Premier League champions if Kevin De Bruyne does remain at the club after the transfer window. Despite his age, the Manchester City midfielder is still one of Pep Guardiola’s side’s most influential players. This was on full display last season after De Bruyne returned from a serious hamstring injury and again so far this summer with Belgium. The time will come when the champions will have to replace De Bruyne. But it doesn’t appear to be a pressing need just yet. He still has plenty to offer and it will be to Manchester City’s benefit if he does remain at the club for next season. De Bruyne’s leadership and all-around ability are massive weapons for Manchester City. Replacing them when he does leave the club will be no easy task. But that may not be a scenario City have to face this summer.
Kevin De Bruyne’s most recent comments are the strongest indication yet that he is set to remain at Manchester City for next season. That is welcome news in what has so far been a quiet summer for the world champions.
