What areas of the Manchester City squad need strengthening this summer?

What areas of the Manchester City squad need strengthening this summer? It’s an interesting question to ponder as the champions look to add to their squad this summer. The City squad doesn’t appear to need a full-blown overhaul. But some fine-tuning may be required if Pep Guardiola’s side are to push for a fifth consecutive Premier League title and challenge on multiple fronts next season.

One pressing area of need for Manchester City appears to be reliable support for Rodri. Of all of City’s players, the Spanish midfielder carries the heaviest workload. With a busy summer of internationals ahead and a busier schedule confronting the world champions next summer, a player to support Rodri must be at the top of City’s summer priorities. While Rodri is one of the premier midfielders in world football he can’t be expected to carry such a heavy burden next season. Finding quality support for Rodri is a must for Manchester City.

The next area of need appears to be more creativity out wide or in midfield. As it stands currently Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden carry a heavy attacking burden for the champions. The pair are the chief creators in the Manchester City squad. While players such as Jeremy Doku, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez, and Oscar Bobb can chime in it appears that the Manchester City squad could do with more creativity. It isn’t a pressing need but it does appear to be an area where Pep Guardiola could benefit from having more options.

The rest of the Manchester City squad appears well set. It may be a case of who departs the champions as to what other areas need replenishing. Fabrizio Romano has previously reported that Ederson could leave Manchester City this summer. If the Brazilian international departs City this summer the champions will need a new keeper. The same can be said for City’s defensive stocks and across the pitch. Who departs the champions will dictate what other areas City may look to strengthen this summer.

The Manchester City squad doesn’t seem to need a drastic overhaul. Some fine-tuning will see Pep Guardiola’s squad head into next season potentially in a stronger position than they sit currently. While it appears quiet on the transfer front at this stage it looms as a crucial summer window for Manchester City.
