Season 23/24 ended with disappointment for Manchester City as they went down 2-1 to Manchester United in yesterday’s FA Cup final. The season ended on a sour note as defeat to their arch rivals saw history slip through their fingers at Wembley. But despite the disappointing ending to this season, it has been another remarkable season for Pep Guardiola’s side.
This season began with Manchester City entering the campaign off the back of their treble success. They had risen the bar to such a level that at times, another treble seemed a distinct possibility for the world champions. While their UEFA Champions League and FA Cup campaigns ended in heartbreak, it doesn’t take the gloss off what was a superb season for Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side finishes this season with another treble of trophies. They claimed the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time in the clubs history. Those feats will be looked upon as landmark moments for the Premier League champions. They capped off City’s rise as a club over the past decade.
But there would be a bigger achievement to come. Pep Guardiola’s side created history by claiming their fourth consecutive Premier League title. They became the first team in English football history to win four consecutive league titles. That achievement speaks volumes about the motivation, consistency, and drive amongst the Manchester City squad. It may take time for the gravity of Manchester City’s achievement to sink in. It is another remarkable feat performed by a remarkable manager and his staff and players.
Speaking after his team’s defeat to Manchester United Pep Guardiola acknowledged the disappointment of yesterday’s result. But he had praise for his team after another remarkable season. He told the media: “The team was there like all the time when we lose, we are there. Disappointed today, that is normal from teams who lose finals. But the season has been again extraordinary, fighting for all the trophies in every way. Rest and come back next season.”
Despite yesterday’s disappointment, the 23/24 season was another remarkable campaign for Manchester City. While losing to their arch rivals leaves a bitter taste to carry through the summer, it has been another extraordinary season. Manchester City’s achievements will look even more remarkable once the disappointment of yesterday fades away.
