Could a young playmaker make an impact at Manchester City or will he be sold?

As the 23/24 season draws to a close, there will be a host of players returning to Manchester City after loan spells this season. One such player is young playmaker James McAtee. McAtee spent this season on loan at Sheffield United. While the Blades were relegated, there were signs from McAtee that he could develop into a quality Premier League player. With that in mind, could he make an impact at Manchester City, or does his future lie elsewhere?

This season saw McAtee have his first exposure to Premier League football. He made 33 appearances for Sheffield United this season. The young playmaker added 5 goals and 4 assists in those appearances for the Blades. At times, his undoubted quality and potential were on display this season. Other times, he was reduced to a spectator as Sheffield United had a poor season before they were ultimately relegated this season.

Manchester City do have a talented player at their disposal in James McAtee. That has been evident during his time at the club. He has spent the past two seasons on loan at Sheffield United. The opportunity to play consistent first team football in the Championship and the Premier League this season has furthered his game. It now poses a question: Could he make an impact for the champions, or will he be sold this summer?

Finding where McAtee could potentially fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad is no easy feat. McAtee plays a similar position to Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne. He wouldn’t take either of their positions in the squad. He has the potential to possibly slot in in a wide role. But the champions have Oscar Bobb, who is currently developing in that position. It may prove telling that Bobb stayed at City this season and McAtee went out on loan. While McAtee is a talented prospect, he does appear to be a level below Oscar Bobb as a player. Any chances to crack into Pep Guardiola’s squad appear slim for the young playmaker.

A summer mover may beckon for McAtee. Alan Nixon has previously reported for the Sun that newly promoted Leicester City have shown interest in signing McAtee. That may be the best move for the youngster. His talent is evident, but he could be starved of opportunities if he remains at Manchester City next season.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for James McAtee. He no doubt has the talent and potential to become a quality Premier League player. But he may not be ready to force his way into City’s first team squad. A summer move for the young playmaker may be the best move for all concerned this summer.
