Are a pair of Brazilians set to land at the Etihad this summer?

Could a pair of Brazilians land at the Etihad this summer? Manchester City has been heavily linked with potential moves for Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

Sam Dean has reported for the Telegraph that City is set to battle Arsenal for the signing of Bruno Guimaraes this summer. Furthermore, Dean reports that £100 million is the price required to sign Guimaraes from Newcastle. Jacob Steinberg has reported for the Guardian that City could move for Paqueta this summer if he is cleared in the betting investigation he is currently under. In addition to City’s interest, Steinberg adds that West Ham is unlikely to accept anything less than the £85 million release clause in Paqueta’s contract to sell the midfielder.

The pair of Brazilians would bring their own unique assets to the champions.

The pair of Brazilians could prove to be astute signings for Manchester City. While they would both come at a heavy price, they would immediately add quality to Pep Guardiola’s squad. With their international pedigree and Premier League experience, they could almost immediately slot into roles for the world champions. Lucas Paqueta has proven his quality this season for West Ham. With his creativity and eye for a pass, he does appear ideally suited to slot into the Manchester City squad.

Bruno Guimaraes does appear the ideal player to support Rodri in City’s midfield. If he were to arrive at the Etihad, he could immediately support City’s midfield general. There is also the potential that he could form a dynamic partnership in the heart of midfield with Rodri while he could also give Rodri the rest he needs when required. There is also the potential of the pair forming a dynamic partnership in City’s midfield. A player such as Guimaraes may release Rodri to become a bigger weapon going forward from midfield. The potential addition of Guimaraes to City’s midfield does open up more possibilities for Pep Guardiola.

The pair of Brazilians wouldn’t come cheap, which may prove an impediment to any potential City move.

There may, however, prove to be an obstacle in any future move by Manchester City for Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes. Included in Jacob Steinberg and Sam Dean’s reports are the sizable release clauses in Paqueta’s and Guimaraes’ contracts. Paqueta has an £85 million release clause in his current West Ham contract. Guimaraes has a £100 million release clause included in his Newcastle contract. That represents £185 million if City were to sign both this summer.

It is a significant outlay for two players. Manchester City may have to sell some current first team regulars to accommodate the potential arrival of Paqueta and Guimaraes. After an era of success in recent seasons, the champions may elect to refresh their squad this summer. How significant a rebuild Manchester City intends to make will become apparent when the transfer window does open.
