Manchester City 2 Newcastle 0: City player ratings as the FA Cup holders book another Wembley date

Here are the Manchester City player ratings as the FA Cup holders booked themselves a place in the semi-final stage of this season’s FA Cup with a 2-nil win over Newcastle.

A pair of first-half deflected strikes from Bernardo Silva were enough for Manchester City to claim a record-breaking sixth consecutive FA Cup semi-final berth. Following last weekend’s chaotic 1-all draw with Liverpool, the FA Cup holders were in complete control against Newcastle. The midfield pairing of Rodri and Mateo Kovacic brought a sense of calm to Pep Guardiola’s side, and it was evident against Eddie Howe’s side.

It was a professional display from the world champions as they dominated Newcastle. It was a performance that built confidence for Manchester City as the pressure intensifies after next weekend’s international break.

City player ratings

Stefan Ortega-7/10: Made one brilliant save in the first half and was composed with his feet

Kyle Walker-7/10: A much better performance from the City captain. Barely tested at the back and good when City had possession.

Ruben Dias-7/10: Made several crucial interventions in a typical Dias display.

Manuel Akanji-7.5/10: A steady outing from Akanji. Barely troubled and did his work with minimal fuss.

Josko Gvardiol-7.5/10: There is an argument that he is City’s best left-back, which is harsh on Ake. A polished performance.

Rodri-7.5/10: Dictated midfield and was his usual self over the 90 minutes.

Mateo Kovacic-8/10: Added more control to the City midfield in a superb performance. He has likely played his way into City’s best eleven at a critical stage of the season.

Phil Foden-7.5/10: Some magical touches and his class were evident over the 90 minutes.

Bernardo Silva-8.5/10: Bernardo’s two deflected strikes effectively ended the contest in the first half. Another all action display from the Portuguese international.

Jeremy Doku-7.5/10: A much better display from the Belgian international. Drifted all over the pitch and was a constant threat to the Newcastle defence. Once he improves his final delivery he could become almost unplayable.

Erling Haaland-7/10: A good all-around display from Haaland. Was more involved in the build-up play, and his presence unsettled the Newcastle defence.

Substitutes

Oscar Bobb-6/10: A nice cameo off the bench. A few nice touches in the 15 minutes or so he was on the pitch.

Julian Alvarez-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
