Could Manchester City be forced to look to the transfer market this summer for a new backup keeper? A recent report indicates that Stefan Ortega is stalling on signing a new contract with the world champions.
It does appear clear that Stefan Ortega is too good to be a number two keeper. During his time at Manchester City Ortega has shone in goal when given the opportunity to impress. Since arriving at Manchester City on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld the German keeper has made 23 appearances for the European champions. The vast majority of the Ortega’s appearances have come in cup competitions. He has been City’s cup keeper of choice. Ortega played a key role in Manchester City’s FA Cup wj last season.
But unfortunately for Stefan Ortega, he has Ederson blocking his path to a more prominent role at the club. The Brazilian keeper is one of the world’s premier goalkeepers and an important piece of Pep Guardiola’s system. With his path to City’s first team blocked it does appear that Ortega could leave Manchester City for regular first-team opportunities. It would be a shame to see the keeper leave but it would be understandable given his quality.
Transfer expert Florian Plettenberg has reported via his X account that Ortega is stalling on signing a new deal with the treble winners. Plettenberg adds that Ortega is ready to be a number-one keeper rather than a backup. Furthermore, Florian Plettenberg adds that Pep Guardiola values Stefan Ortega highly given his importance to the City squad.
It would be a blow to Manchester City if Stefan Ortega did depart this summer. He has made a valuable contribution to the world champions during his spell at the club. Finding a backup keeper of his quality could be a tough task for Manchester City this summer if does seek first-team football elsewhere.
