Pep Guardiola created the ideal role for John Stones to thrive

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola created the perfect role for John Stones to thrive in. The role played by the England international became a key factor in last season’s treble success. His role has evolved again of late as Stones takes his game to another level.

The ability of John Stones to play as a midfielder has always been evident. His ability on the ball as a defender is a standout attribute of his game. It was that attribute that turned the tactical adjustment from Pep Guardiola last season into a masterstroke.

By drifting into midfield from defence when City had possession it allows Stones to showcase his immense talent in midfield. His strengths add to a formidable Manchester City midfield. Playing alongside Rodri when the champions have possession gives the world champions a wall across midfield. The double pivot allows players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland and co to do what they do best at the top of the pitch. They can attack with the knowledge that they have Stones and Rodri behind to clean up after them. It has become a valuable weapon in the treble winner’s armoury.

During Manchester City’s last two wins over Bournemouth and Luton Town, John Stones has ventured further forward. The game of the England international has now become a weapon in attack for Pep Guardiola’s side. That side of his game has shown just how vital Stones is to Manchester City’s success.

Speaking with the Official Manchester City podcast John Stones explained that he was keen to play the role asked of him by Pep Guardiola from the start. He further explained that his new role has given him more appreciation of the roles of his teammates in midfield. He explained: “From the start. It goes back to learning. Playing in there you appreciate other people’s roles and see their positions from a different perspective. You realise when sometimes I might give a pass into a midfielder but being on the receiving end of that, you know that that’s the wrong pass or the wrong position to give it. You appreciate someone else’s role in the team.”
