Manchester City 6 Luton Town 2: City player ratings as the FA Cup holders progress to the sixth round

Here are the City player ratings as the FA Cup holders booked their place in the sixth round of the FA Cup with a 6-2 win over Luton Town. It was an entertaining affair at Kenilworth Road the goals flowed as both sides chased a victory.

Erling Haaland scored 5 goals in a match for the second time in his Manchester City career in a dominant performance. It was Haaland at his best as he appeared in top form ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby. Kevin De Bruyne provided four assists for City’s number 9 in a display that put to bed any injury concerns over the Manchester City legend.

Luton Town to their credit did make a game of it after going down 3-nil to Erling Haaland’s first-half hat-trick. A stunning brace from Jordan Clark with goals either side of halftime briefly lifted the home crowd before two more goals from Haaland in 6 minutes ended the cup tie. Mateo Kovacic added a sixth for Manchester City late on as they cruised to a place in the sixth round of the competition.

City player ratings

Stefan Ortega-6/10: Made several brilliant saves but also his poor clearance led to Luton Town’s second. A mixed bag from Ortega.

Kyle Walker-6/10: City’s captain was sloppy early in the game but better in the later stages. Not his best performance.

John Stones-10/10: The England international was superb. Haaland and De Bruyne will get the plaudits but Stones was equally as impressive. His runs forward are becoming a real weapon for Pep Guardiola.

Manuel Akanji-6.5/10: A professional performance from the Swiss international. Not as dominant as his last two outings but did his job.

Nathan Ake-7/10: Another typical Ake display. Polished, professional and rarely beaten on the night.

Mateo Kovacic-8/10: Scored City’s 6th with a wonder strike late on. Showed that he could step in for Rodri if required and his runs from midfield and poise in possession were a standout.

Matheus Nunes-7.5/10: A good performance from Nunes. Drifted all over the pitch and was a threat throughout. Is slowly adjusting to life under Pep Guardiola. Will have a role to play as the season heats up.

Kevin De Bruyne-10/10: Provided 4 assists for Haaland on the night and put any injury fears to bed. Dominated the game from midfield in a superb performance.

Bernardo Silva-7.5/10: Another busy performance and a step up from his last performances. Was all over the pitch as his movement caused Luton headaches all night.

Jack Grealish-6.5/10: Looked sharp and in good form before injury struck. He cannot get a run at it at the moment which is a shame for him and Pep Guardiola’s side.

Erling Haaland-10/10: Scored 5 for the second time in his Manchester City career. Looks to be in ominous form ahead of a crucial run of fixtures. His performance will strike fear into City’s rivals.

Substitutes

Jeremy Doku-6/10: Replaced Grealish after the England international went off injured in the first half. Toiled away without really affecting the game. He did drift all over the pitch which is a new feature of his game as he develops.

Oscar Bobb-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Rico Lewis-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Sergio Gomez-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Julian Alvarez-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

  1. Stones 10 is very generous. Akanji 6.5 is mean. Ake 7 is “which game were you watching”. Bernardo 7.5 is a stretch. Grealish 6.5 … LOL … then you must be family. Haaland 10 … does he get 2 pt for weak goal keeping … did miss easier chances.
