Esteemed Kompany host Steven Mcinerney reviews Manchester City’s 1-nil win over Tottenham. The win saw Pep Guardiola’s side progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup. It also saw them finally break their curse at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The FA Cup holders had failed to win or score a goal in their previous 5 games at the venue. But Nathan Ake’s 88th-minute winner finally snapped the curse.
For Manchester City, it was one of their best defensive displays of the season. The entire team put a shift in as they held Ange Postecoglou’s side to only one shot of target over the full 90 minutes. City’s defence resembled the one that led them to the treble last season. If the performance from Stefan Ortega, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol at the back is a sign of things to come City will be well placed to defend the treble this season.
Their defensive strength formed the foundation of a dominant City performance. Pep Guardiola’s side was by far the better side throughout the game and were good value for the win. They dominated the game for large spells and the biggest surprise was that it took so long for City to break through the Spurs defence. It was one of the treble winners best performances of the season and continued their strong recent form.
Mateo Kovacic put in a man-of-the-match performance and continued his strong recent form. The Croatian midfielder is becoming an integral part of the City midfield and his recent resurgence has coincided with the European champions 7 game winning run.
