Esteemed Kompany host Steven Mcinerney looks at what went wrong for Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City. Fabrizio Romano broke the news earlier this week that Phillips is set to join the Hammers this week. The transfer expert further reports that the loan deal for Phillips includes an option to buy in the deal. It would appear that the England international’s time at Manchester City is now over.

The attributes of the England international did seem to fit Pep Guardiola’s side. He had shone for Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds which paved the way for his move to Manchester City.
But it wasn’t to be for Kalvin Phillips. Injury forced him into a late start to his City career and he never made an impression during his spell at the club. He also reported back from the 2022 World Cup ‘overweight‘ which also cost him his standing in the Manchester City squad. As last season went on he couldn’t crack into the treble winners squad as Rodri’s strong form saw Phillips reduced to a substitute for the majority of last season.
The England international was determined to stay and fight for his spot in the City squad this summer. To his credit, he showed the determination to make it at the European champions. But it wasn’t to be as he couldn’t force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans. A move to West Ham appears best for all parties concerned and he leaves with the well wishes from everyone connected to Manchester City.
