Is a new deal at Manchester City on the horizon for an on-loan Brazilian full-back?

Is a new contract on the horizon for Manchester City’s on-loan Brazilian full-back Yan Couto? The young defender has shone for La Liga surprise packets Girona so far this season. A recent report indicates that the world champions are keen to extend the youngster’s contract with the club.

Transfer journalist José Félix Diaz has reported that Manchester City have attempted to renew Yan Couto’s contract with the club. In a report published on bernabeudigital.com Diaz further explains that Real Madrid is monitoring the young Brazilian full-back. He adds that Manchester City have begun talks to extend Couto’s contract with the club. Speaking on Real Madrid’s interest in Couto and City’s attempt to extend the Brazilians contract he said: “At the moment they are seeing that he is a player who is evolving in a brutal way, and that his contractual situation is favourable to try him out. He has a contract until 2025 with Manchester City. It seems that there has been an attempt to renew.”

Yan Couto is currently contracted with Manchester City until the end of the 2024/25 season. He has become a key player in Girona’s rise this season. Couto has made 24 appearances for Girona in all competitions this season. He has scored once and added seven assists in those performances.

Manchester City’s reported attempt to renew Couto’s contract with the club could indicate they see him as a potential replacement for Kyle Walker. Pep Guardiola’s squad doesn’t have a ready-made replacement for their captain.

If Yan Couto can continue his strong form for the remainder of the season he may play his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans for next season. If the report is correct a new deal for Diaz may indicate that City see him potentially as Kyle Walker’s long-term replacement.
