Is Manchester City’s trip to Goodison Park the game where the annual City surge begins?

After winning the FIFA Club World Cup Manchester City travel to Goodison Park to face Sean Dyche’s Everton on Wednesday evening. Currently sitting 5th in the Premier League albeit with a game in hand can the champions start another long winning run at a tricky venue against a tough opponent?

Everton will head into their clash with City sitting 16th. They have 16 points after having 10 points deducted due to a FFP breach. They will be a tough opponent, especially at Goodison Park.  Pep Guardiola’s side will be looking to return to winning ways buoyed by their recent FIFA Club World Cup success.

It is traditionally around this time of the season when Manchester City click into gear. The treble winners sit within touching distance of Premier League leaders Arsenal. They are currently 6 points behind the Gunners with a game in hand. Last season City overhauled an 8-point gap with 9 games to play to win the title over Arsenal. This time there is a lot more time left in this season.

It has become almost an annual event for City to click into gear around the New Year or just after. In the 2018/19 season, they won 14 games in a row to beat Liverpool by a solitary to the Premier League title. They followed suit during the 2020/21 season. A 15-game winning streak in the league started on the 19th of December. They strung together the winning streak until the 2nd of March as City ran away with the title.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been here before. With Liverpool and Arsenal playing out a 1-all draw last weekend if City can get three points at Goodison Park it may spark them into life in the Premier League. It would also remind their rivals they are capable of overhauling the deficit.
