Manchester City have the chance to create history against Fluminense

Manchester City have the chance to create more history in Friday’s FIFA Club World Cup final against Fluminense. Their 3-nil over Urawa Red Diamonds has given the European champions an opportunity that may not present itself again. Pep Guardiola’s side can become the first English side in history to hold the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with a victory over Fluminense.

Such rare air has almost become a common occurrence during Pep Guardiola’s reign at Manchester City. The Centurions side of the 17/18 season became the first side in Premier League to reach the 100 point mark en route to the Premier League title. They have then made 90 points the mark to claim the Premier League title in recent seasons such has been their dominance of the competition as they’ve won 5 of the past 6 Premier League titles.

Last season’s treble success saw City become only the second side in English football history to achieve the feat. They joined Manchester United’s squad of 1999 in a season that will never be forgotten. The success last season has now given Manchester City the chance to stand alone in football history with a victory on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola spoke of the opportunity in front of Manchester City being a once in a lifetime chance. Speaking after their win over Urawa Red Diamonds the City manager said: “To be in this final you have to do incredible things like win the Champions League. This may be the only time we play this in our lifetime. We are there. Tomorrow we start to watch Fluminense and see them and try to do a good performance.”

Friday’s final could be a historical moment for Manchester City, one that will be remembered forever.
