Matheus Nunes shows he belongs at Manchester City against Urawa Red Diamonds

Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes showed he belongs a the European champions with a dominant display against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Portuguese international put in man-of-the-match display in City’s 3-nil win over the AFC Champions League winners to book their place in Friday’s FIFA Club World Cup final against Fluminense.

The midfielder had made a slow start to his career at the European champions. A combination of injury and adapting to his new surroundings meant that Nunes has taken time to settle in. After signing for City on transfer deadline day in September the midfielder has had to wait for an opportunity to impress. At FIFA Club World Cup against Urawa that chance came and he seized it with both hands.

Playing in midfield with a licence to roam forward Matheus Nunes produced his best performance for Manchester City. His drive from midfield was a constant threat to the determined Urawa defence. His industry and skill on the ball helped City open up the Japanese side on multiple occasions. It was this attribute of Nunes that created City’s opening goal. It was a superb piece of play from the midfielder and exemplified what he adds to Pep Guardiola’s side.

After a slow start to his City career the past two starts for the Portuguese midfielder have shown what he adds to the treble winners. He was good in City’s 3-2 win over Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League. But his performance against Urawa was on another level again. On a big stage he showed exactly how important he could become for City.

With Friday’s final against Fluminense on the horizon Matheus Nunes has now shown he belongs at Manchester City. He could potentially become a key piece for City in the second half of the season.
