Could a Fluminense midfielder be the perfect January signing for City?

As the January transfer window approaches it appears that Manchester City need midfield reinforcements. With Kalvin Phillips looking set to leave the club in January could a Fluminense midfielder be his ideal replacement? Andre of Fluminense is the latest midfielder to be linked with the treble winners so what could he add to Pep Guardiola’s side?

Phil Thomas of the Sun has reported that Manchester City may join the race for Andre. The midfielder is valued at £30 million Thomas reports. He adds Fulham and Liverpool are also interested in the Brazilian international.

So what type of player is Andre and what could he bring to the Etihad? The Brazilian plays primarily as a defensive midfielder for Fluminense. Though he’s tasked with shielding his defence Andre also possesses great technical ability. He is strong on the ball and his dribbling ability is an asset to his team. The midfielder is also strong in the tackle which is a key asset to his game. Another key part of his game is his pace which allows him to recover his position when drifts forward and helps neutralize opposing attacks.

While there are strengths to Andre’s game he does have weaknesses. He tends to pick up bookings which is part and parcel of the position he plays. As per transfermarkt.com in 60 appearances in 2023 for the Copa Libertadores winners he has picked up 17 yellow cards and 1 red card. His tendency to pick up bookings would need to be harnessed if were to make a move to the European champions.

As the January transfer window approaches City have been linked with a move for a midfielder. With Joshua Kimmich linked to the Etihad and now Andre it appears that one midfielder will arrive at the club. Andre could fit the bill as someone who can help Pep Guardiola’s side.
