Manchester City 2 Luton Town 1: City player ratings

Here are the City player ratings as Manchester City returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. The hosts took the lead on the stroke of halftime through a towering header from Elijah Adebayo. The pressure was on for the champions to respond in the second half and they did. Two goals in three minutes from Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish were enough for Pep Guardiola’s side to claim all three points. It also ended City’s four-game run without a win and put them 4 points behind league leaders Liverpool. It could be the win to reignite City’s season after a recent rough spell for the European champions. Here are the City player ratings from the hard-fought win.

City player ratings:

Ederson-6/10: Didn’t have a lot to do but possibly could’ve claimed Andros Townsend’s cross for Luton’s opener. Dealt with Luton’s late barrage of corners well to help his side claim all three points.

Kyle Walker-6.5/10: Was poor in the first half but looked like the Kyle Walker of old in the second half. A much better performance from the City captain.

Ruben Dias-6/10: Caught out for Adebayo’s header. Was a lot better in the second half and had a cracking effort tipped onto the bar. Is starting to get back into form.

Nathan Ake-8/10: Almost City’s man of the match. Did his job with a minimal amount of fuss and was rarely beaten. Outstanding performance from Ake.

Josko Gvardiol-7/10: Was a constant threat going forward down City’s left-hand side. One of his better performances in the past month before being substituted.

Rodri-7.5/10: Showed why he’s so important to Pep Guardiola’s side with another dominant display. It was his driving run that set up Bernardo Silva’s equaliser.

Mateo Kovacic-6.5/10: Gave City more control in midfield and looked comfortable. A welcome sight after his recent injuries.

Bernardo Silva-8/10: Yet another superb display from Bernardo. His finish was world-class for his goal.

Jack Grealish-7/10: Did his job on City’s left wing. A fantastic moment for him to score the winner when his team needed it.

Phil Foden-7.5/10: Showed his quality playing in a central midfield role. His touch and all-round ability were on show in a quality performance.

Julian Alvarez-6/10: Set up the winner for Jack Grealish with a wonderful cross. Toiled away but couldn’t get into the game but still provided a match-winning moment.

Substitutes:

John Stones-6/10: Brought on to help his side at the back. Stood up well as Luton pushed for an equaliser.

Matheus Nunes-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Manual Akanji-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
